Community-led conversations about sexual health
The Safe and Healthy Project aims to increase knowledge about sexual health for LGBTIQA+ forcibly displaced people.
This page is for us – LGBTIQA+ forcibly displaced people. We have the right to be healthy, love our bodies, feel safe, and build respectful, thriving relationships.
Too often we are made invisible in health promotion, we cannot access services because of stigma, Medicare or even such harmful experiences as racism, homo and transphobia.
So, together with the community we have created Together We Stand: The Pod Squad Story. It is a comic about sexual health of LGBTIQA+ forcibly displaced people. But this comic isn’t just another resource filled with links—it’s a story of community, resilience, and care.
Together We Stand: The Pod Squad Story
Join Hao, Karim, Maria, Noor, and Alex on their camping trip, where meaningful conversations unfold. They share experiences about sexual health and well-being, discuss the challenges of navigating consent, and reflect on overcoming intimate partner violence. Together, they explore what it means to build healthy, respectful relationships. Along the way, they stand united, supporting each other against homophobia and transphobia.
We hope it resonates with you, sparks important conversations, and most importantly, makes you feel seen and valued.
How the comic was created
This comic was created through a co-design process with our Lived Experience Advisory Group SAME. SAME members were involved at every step of the way: from creating a story, naming characters, agreeing on visuals to peer-review of translations.
It followed community consultations and forum to make sure that the content was relatable to LGBTIQA+ forcibly displaced people.
Note on language in translations
We acknowledge that many terms used to describe various sexual and gender identities have complex histories. Some words have been reclaimed from derogatory origins, while others, though widely used, may still carry implicit biases or lack inclusivity. We have tried to select translations that, to the best of our knowledge, reflect our community’s preferences. We have avoided words that promotes a sense of “otherness.” In some sections, we use the term “rainbow communities” as an umbrella term for our diversity. However, we acknowledge its Western origins and that it may not resonate with everyone. We believe that, collectively, we shape our shared oral and written history, along with the terminology we use. Thus, the translations remain dynamic, flexible, and alive.
