What does ‘forcibly displaced person’ mean?
We use the term ‘forcibly displaced person’ to acknowledge the diverse and complex experiences of people who have been compelled to leave their homes. This term includes people seeking asylum, people recognised as refugees and migrants, particularly those from outside the Global North. We say that people became forcibly displaced, because being LGBTIQA+, many experienced varying degrees of coercion or external pressure that led to their relocation to Australia, even if they had a choice of visa.
Using the term ‘forcibly displaced person’ we recognise that where one assumes that migration is a choice, in the example of LGBTIQA+ people, it highlights the systemic, social, or economic forces that often leave individuals with little to no choice but to move.
